MWC:SPORTS presents the second in the Skill School series – A monthly set of training tips from ECB Performance Coach and England LD Wicket Keeping Coach Mark Costin.
The drills on here are aimed at players who are unsure of how to train or just looking for different ideas. #2 is the second in our wicket keeping series.
The single most important thing a wicket keeper needs to do in training is catch a lot of balls. After that everything else is just icing on the cake. The video below looks at the importance of being within arms reach of the stumps when stood up to the wicket.
The key coaching points are:
• When taking wider deliveries, make sure your inside foot stays anchored near the stumps.
• Reach with your hands to take the ball outside of your body. You’d usually want to take the ball under your eyes but here if you do that you have to move your feet away from the stumps so you give yourself a slightly harder take so that you can affect a stumping.
• Make sure you can reach the stumps
• Bring the ball back to the stumps quickly.
